List of Star Trek: Voyager episodes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an episode list for the science-fiction television series Star Trek: Voyager, which aired on UPN from January 1995 through May 2001. This is the fifth television program in the Star Trek franchise, and comprises a total of 168 (DVD and original broadcast) or 172 (syndicated) episodes over the show's seven seasons. Four episodes of Voyager ("Caretaker", "Dark Frontier", "Flesh and Blood", and "Endgame") each originally aired as two-hour presentations, and are considered whole episodes on the DVD release; additionally, parts I and II of "The Killing Game" aired back-to-back, and are treated as separate episodes on the DVD release. The episodes are listed in chronological order by original air date, which match the episode order in each season's DVD set. This list also includes the stardate on which the events of each episode took place. Of the ratings listed below, total viewership for the episode is listed for season 1; however, from season 2 the episode household ratings are listed.

As her training as the Doctor’s new assistant continues, Kes is disturbed by the lack of respect that some crew members display towards the holographic EMH.
The crew’s hopes are raised when a wormhole is detected as it may offer the chance of a return to the Alpha Quadrant. The wormhole turns out to have only a tiny aperture but may still be utilised to communicate a message to Star Fleet. Using a microprobe as a relay, they send a compressed data transmission that is received by a Romulan ship which claims to be a cargo vessel. The Romulan Captain is very suspicious indeed when Janeway explains that Voyager is actually in the Delta Quadrant. Janeway requests that the Romulan Captain might convey personal messages from each member of the crew to their families, via Star Fleet.
But a persistent phase variance in the signal to the Alpha Quadrant turns out to have unforeseen heart-breaking ramifications for the crew’s hopes.

The Romulan Captain may appear familiar as he is played by Vaughn Armstrong who later appeared as Admiral Forrest in Star Trek: Enterprise.

The Doctor and Kes discuss possible names the EMH might choose for himself. She suggests that Doctors from history, who the EMH admires, might be good starting points for inspiration. In Kes’ encouragement of the Doctor to go beyond his strict programming, we see the germ of the Doctor’s later encouragement of Seven of Nine to do the same thing.
On a mission to the Banean home world, Tom Paris and Harry Kim seek the assistance of leading Physicist, Professor Tolen Ren. Ren has a much younger wife, Lidell, who Tom is instantly attracted to.
When Harry returns to Voyager alone, he recounts the story of Tom having been accused and found guilty of the murder of the kindly old Professor. Tom’s punishment is to repeatedly re-experience the murder - from the perspective of the victim! But Tom insists he has no recollection of the events as shown in the recorded memory that convicted him. Tuvok investigates and forms a hypothesis regarding what may have actually happened. But, in order to prove his hypothesis, one way or the other, he must perform a Vulcan mind-meld with Tom.

This episode can be seen as a Star Trek take on Film noir. The frequent use of flashbacks, memory sequences shown in black and white, the ‘femme fatale’ frustrated younger wife (Lidell), the seduced patsy (Tom) and the chivalrous Detective (Tuvok) who uncovers the complex truth - plus the frequent and convenient rain showers, are all familiar motifs from classic Film noir.
99"Emanations"48623.5David LivingstonBrannon BragaMarch 13, 1995 (1995-03-13)40840-10910.3[9]

There is scientific excitement onboard Voyager as they believe they have discovered a new element. This element is located in the elaborate ring system of an otherwise un-remarkable planet. Janeway quickly despatches an away team, under Chakotay, to investigate. Their hopes are dashed when they discover they are in a series of Burial chambers which contain humanoid corpses. The ‘new element’ turns out to be a by-product of the decomposition process of the corpses. Things get worse when subspace vacuoles start opening without warning. Chakotay requests an emergency beam out but when he and B’Elanna rematerialize on the ship they discover Harry is not with them - but the corpse of a recently deceased humanoid female is.
This episode can be interpreted as an argument against Assisted dying. The character of Hatil, who ultimately helps Harry escape, feels like he is a financial burden to his family, and it emerges that the overwhelming pressure he feels is what reluctantly brought him to the Cenotaph process.

If the Vhnoran Dr. Neria seems familiar, it is because actor Jerry Hardin played Samuel Clemens (i.e. Mark Twain) in the Star Trek: The Next Generation double episode ‘Time’s Arrow’.

Janeway and Tuvok are lunching together in the mess hall. Janeway is delighted at the positive banter between Maquis members of the crew and Starfleet personnel. It would appear that both crews are getting along. Chow time is interrupted by a distress call from another ship. But when communication is achieved with the aliens, they inform Janeway that the crew of Voyager are the ones in distress.
The aliens are from the planet Sikaris and are a highly advanced race, both technologically and in terms of their sophisticated cultural and culinary pursuits. The Sikarans offer the crew respite – a brief shore-leave on their long journey home. Janeway accepts the hospitality so generously offered.
Through conversing with a young woman Harry realises that the Sikarans are fascinated with simple stories that they have never heard before. Harry’s new companion, Eudana, invites him to visit her favourite place, Alastria. Harry discovers that Alastria is not a location of Sikaris at all but is a planet some 40,000 light years distant!
The device that Harry and Eudana used to travel to Alastria is a ‘Spatial Trajector’ and utilises the principle of folding space to travel immense distances. Unfortunately, the Sikarans have a law – a corollary of the Federation’s Prime Directive - that means they simply cannot share such advanced technology. But, Voyager’s computer contains the literature of the many worlds of the Federation and the Sikaran’s insatiable appetite for unfamiliar stories may prove to be an incentive to trade that some Sikarans simply cannot resist.

For the first time in their journey, Janeway and the crew find themselves in the very uncomfortable situation of being on the wrong side of someone else’s equivalent of the Prime Directive. They now know the frustration of being denied something that would benefit them greatly. Thus, Janeway faces an ethical dilemma unlike any she has faced before.

There are moments in this episode that are reminiscent of John Carpenter’s The Thing. The non-corporeal alien entity ‘inhabits’ various members of the crew in order to advance its agenda, but neither the crew, nor the audience, know for sure who is being controlled.

Summary of 2-Part episodes

[edit]

Here is a summary of 2-part Voyager episodes, which are sometimes shown as a single feature length media and reviewed as such.

The feature-length episodes are among the series' highest rated.[168] In a 2016 review by The Hollywood Reporter ranking the top 15 Voyager episodes, 6 were double-episodes with "Year of Hell" and "Equinox" in the top two spots.[168] A 2012 top ten ranking by Den of Geek also placed "Year of Hell" as number one out of 172 shows.[169]
